The title Kyma refers to the Greek word for ‘wave’, encapsulating the concept of continuous flow and movement, much like both sound and waves. This idea serves as a metaphor for the transmission of musical energy, as it is emitted by the flautist and pianist and travels through the air, reaching the listener, just as sea waves carry energy through water. The pieces featured in the album reflect diverse musical languages and styles, yet they are interconnected by their Neoclassical elements.

C. Y. Stylianou: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
The album is called empneusis (from the Ancient Greek ἐμπνεῦσις) to highlight the deep connection between music and breath, as epitomised by these works.

L. V. Beethoven. Beethoven: Sonata for piano and violoncello No. 4, in C major, Op. 102, No. 2
G. Fauré: Élégie, Op. 24 & Sicilienne, Op. 78
C. Debussy: Sonata for violoncello and piano, L. 135
C. Y. Stylianou: Sonata for violoncello and piano No. 1 in C major
The word ‘hedra’ refers to any side or face of a three-dimensional geometric shape. Any given face is not only connected to its neighbours, but together they contribute to and are part of the final shape. Similarly, every musical masterpiece is interconnected with those that follow, as it inevitably contributed to their formation, and this is reflected in the relationship between the works gathered together on this release. Beethoven pioneered the modern cello sonata, and from first to last his five cello sonatas chart a huge development in the genre.

Past Forward is an album of world-premiere recordings showcasing the gifts of Greek Cypriot composer Constantinos C. Y. Stylianou (b. 1972). Stylianou’s two Sonatas for viola and piano, performed by Hungarian born violist Máté Szűcs and Steinway artist Nicolas Costantinou, contrast the varied timbres of the First Viola Sonata with the spirit of resistance manifest in the Second, which was composed partly as a response to the covid pandemic.

C. Y. Stylianou: 12 Préludes for solo piano, Book I
This album presents a compelling cycle of 12 Préludes for solo piano, each inspired by a distinct work of visual art, spanning painting, sculpture, and modern composition. From the ancient presence of a prehistoric winged goddess to the vivid geometries of Mondrian, the dramatic storms of Turner, the intimate gestures of Matisse, and the expressive forms of Rego, each prelude embodies a unique tonal palette and stylistic character. The collection unfolds as a dynamic journey through contrasting moods and textures, inviting listeners into an immersive dialogue between music and artistic inspiration. The resulting experience is both colorful and profound, capturing the transformative essence suggested by the album’s title, …metavasis, the ancient Greek word for “transition.
